DGD Shredding & Technology Team Brave the Icy Plunge for the Asthma Society of Ireland

On Thursday, 18th September 2025, three courageous members of the DGD Shredding & Technology team took part in the “Icy Plunge” challenge at the Sandymount Hotel, Dublin, in support of the Asthma Society of Ireland.

Braving freezing waters in front of a crowd of supporters and media, our team members demonstrated true grit and determination while raising vital funds for asthma awareness and support services. Between them, Michael Garvey, Gearóid Slattery, and Claire Tierney raised an incredible €3,107, contributing to the overall event total of more than €37,775.

The Icy Plunge brought together over 40 participants from across Ireland, all united by the goal of supporting the 380,000 people in Ireland living with asthma.

The event was also attended by special guests and ambassadors to the Asthma Society Níall Ó Murchú, renowned breathwork instructor, ice bath guide, and bestselling author, as well as Greg O’Shea, Olympian, Ironman contestant, and commentator/presenter. Their encouragement and energy helped inspire participants to push through the challenge.

A highlight of the day was seeing Eilís Ní Chaithnía, CEO of the Asthma Society of Ireland, also take on the plunge alongside participants, demonstrating her leadership and commitment to the cause. We would also like to recognise Phaedra Vlahos, Development Manager for the Asthma Society of Ireland, and the entire Asthma Society team for their hard work in organising and co-ordinating such a successful and memorable event.

Speaking after the plunge, the DGD Shredding & Technology team said:

“It was tough but exhilarating, and absolutely worth it to raise funds for such an important cause. We’re so grateful to everyone who supported us in reaching our fundraising goal.”

The Icy Plunge once again showcased the power of community, determination, and teamwork. At DGD Shredding & Technology, we are proud to support initiatives that make a positive impact in our community and across Ireland.

About the Asthma Society of Ireland

The Asthma Society of Ireland is the national charity dedicated to supporting the half a million people living with asthma across the country. Their mission is to stop asthma deaths in Ireland and to empower people with asthma to live full and active lives.

The Society provides a wide range of services and resources, including a free Asthma and COPD Adviceline, nurse-led clinics, and education programmes for patients, families, schools, and workplaces. They also campaign at a national level for better healthcare policies, improved access to treatment, and greater public awareness around asthma management and triggers.

Research and advocacy are central to their work. The organisation collaborates with healthcare professionals, government bodies, and partner organisations to influence change, reduce hospital admissions, and improve the quality of life for those affected by asthma. They are also active in public awareness campaigns, providing practical tools and information to help people control their condition, prevent asthma attacks, and manage emergencies.

In short, the Asthma Society of Ireland plays a crucial role not just in offering direct support and education to individuals with asthma, but also in shaping a healthier, more asthma-aware Ireland.

A huge thank you goes to everyone who donated, cheered, and helped make this event such a success, and to the Asthma Society of Ireland for their outstanding work in making it possible.

“Events like the Icy Plunge not only raise vital funds but also highlight the importance of supporting those affected by asthma. We are deeply grateful to all who took part.”
