Understanding the Lifecycle process
IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) manages the lifecycle of retired IT equipment. It covers everything that needs to happen once a laptop, server, or hard drive reaches the end of its working life: ensuring any data on it is irrecoverable, tracking the asset through to its final outcome, and either recovering value through resale or disposing of it properly if it cannot be reused.
Three core services determine the outcome of an asset:
- Certified Erasure
Data-bearing devices are wiped using Blancco, an industry-standard certified erasure software, meeting recognised standards such as NIST 800-88. Blancco’s erasure processes are also compliant with ISO 27001. Full documentation is provided so you have proof of what was done and when. This is the preferred route for equipment destined for resale or reuse, since it removes the data without destroying the asset’s value. - IT Asset Resale & Value Recovery
Equipment that still has useful life is assessed, refurbished where needed, and resold, with the recovered value passed back to your business. This turns what would otherwise be a disposal cost into a partial return on the original investment. - Secure Destruction
For devices that cannot or should not be resold, physical destruction of the storage media is carried out under ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and EN 15713, and disposed of in line with WEEE Regulations. It comes with a certificate of destruction, consistent with our shredding service.
Lifecycle Management
Not every retired asset is scrap. A three-year-old laptop fleet or a batch of decommissioned servers often still has real value. DGD Technology’s asset resale and value recovery service assesses equipment for reuse or resale potential before it is destroyed, so businesses can recover some of the original investment rather than simply paying to have it taken away.
This is the difference between disposal and lifecycle management. Disposal is the last resort. Lifecycle management asks, at every stage, whether an asset still has useful life left in it, and only moves to destruction if the equipment is not viable.
Compliant disposal
Electronic waste is subject to its own regulatory requirements under the WEEE Regulations, which govern how businesses in Ireland must handle end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment. Components are separated, recyclable materials are recovered, and hazardous elements are handled appropriately rather than sent to landfill. Equipment that cannot be reused is broken down and disposed of properly, so it does not sit in a storeroom as an unresolved liability, or end up creating an environmental and compliance problem further down the line.
Why This Matters for GDPR
Under GDPR, a business is responsible for personal data regardless of what device it sits on. A shredded invoice and an unwiped hard drive represent a comparable category of risk to a Data Protection Officer, even though they look nothing alike. Many organisations have a process for secure paper destruction already in place, but far fewer apply the same principles to retired IT equipment, which often ends up sitting quietly outside the data protection policy altogether.
This is usually not a deliberate gap. It happens because paper shredding and IT disposal have historically been handled by different suppliers, at different times, under different assumptions about risk.
